It’s never a good idea to ignore resources offered
Our consultant leading the outplacement sessions estimated that 40% to 60% of the people who are offered outplacement services as part of their severance package don’t use it. I can understand why, but even before finding value in the program myself I would have said that it was stupid.
True, not all outplacement services are created equal. If they start breaking out the drums and expect you to walk on anything sharp or burning I suggest you get out of there. But barring that, I can’t think of a satisfactory reason to not take advantage of any and all resources your severance package provides.
You are never so secure in your job hunting skills that you can’t learn something new. Besides networking, you can’t underestimate the emotional support as well. Not to mention that some companies will even let you take paid time to attend the sessions. Companies don’t just pay for these services to be nice or because it’s the right thing to do. They do it because it can reduce stress and improve morale, for everyone.
Look, it’s easy to get bitter, depressed, and prideful when facing a layoff. But you can’t let that stop you from fully taking advantage of every resource handed to you. What do you have to lose by at least checking it out? I give you permission to leave if they start singing Kum Ba Yah.
