… the HR Minion. Because even minions have opinions. And giggles.

It’s a problem of motivation

Everyone has had to deal with employees who lack motivation. In fact, a lack of motivation seems to be some people’s defining characteristic. But have you ever been, or wanted to be, one of them? Have you ever had a job that you hated, for one reason or another, and just didn’t want to care?

I had a job in college that I really, really, really didn’t like. It wasn’t the pay; it was great for a part time gig. It was a combination of people and the work. The work was boring and inconsistent. As for the people, while some were awesome, others were jerks. And I found myself quite apathetic to the whole thing.

And yet, I still went in and did my job like nothing was wrong. Sure, I wasn’t giving 110%, but I wasn’t slacking either. And you know what’s weird? I wanted to slack off. I really did. But then stuff wouldn’t get done and that thought would drive me nuts. As apathetic as I thought I was, I hated the thought that I would be performing poorly.

So, how about you? Have you ever just wanted to play Tetris and eat Cheetos all day at work? Could you do it without feeling guilty?

I love Office Space. There are plenty of days I would love to come to work in my shorts, t-shirt and flip flops and filet a fish on my desk. But like you I have issues with the work not getting done and not getting done right. I can procrastinate with the best of them but in the end, I get the job done but my conscience won’t allow me to do otherwise.

I want to eat Cheetos and play Tetris all day and have the BE my work. Need to figure out how to make that happen.

The only time I was able to eat Cheetos and play Tetris all day at work without feeling guilty was during college and any time prior to that. Nowadays, unless I was making a ton of money doing it, I'd probably feel like a major waste of space. It wouldn't be long until I'd start looking for something that I enjoyed doing, rather than making it to the end of the day with a handful of orange fingers to show for it.

I understand the pain of a high work ethic. It always affects the good ones.

    PseudoHR – I procrastinate too!

    Steve – Wouldn't that be nice! πŸ™‚

Training time – Yeah, I would be wondering why I was even there.

    Rachel – Lol! πŸ™‚
