On slacking and being busy
Sometimes I don’t think there is much difference between slacking and being busy. Oh sure, to the person who is living it there are differences, but from an outsiders perspective they can look exactly the same. Think about it. Emails aren’t being returned in a timely manner, your calls always go to voice mail, and every time you stop by their office there are stacks of paper on their desk. Besides, there are plenty of ways to “look busy” at work, even if you aren’t accomplishing anything at all. Not that I would know anything about that, no not at all (tries to look innocent).
But wait you say, all you need to do is look at what they are producing, right? Well technically yes, even though I would argue that even that can be misleading. For one, production alone doesn’t necessarily equate to the best they can do, and two it’s no guarantee the important tasks are being completed, just that stuff is getting done. Unless you are someone’s manager and know exactly the kind of workload and expectations that person needs to meet, you really don’t know.
By the time this post goes up, I’ll be minutes away from the start of the long Memorial Day weekend and I’m really looking forward to it. Every time I feel like I’m getting a grip on things at work, something comes up and I’m back to running around like a crazy person. But hey, that’s the reality for a lot of people out there right now, and please don’t think I’m complaining. Much. But when I look at all my emails, calls I need to return, or requests I need to follow up on, I sometimes wonder if people think I’m getting anything done at all. And when you are this deep in it, you start worrying about that too.
So I want everyone to take a deep breath, accept that you need a break to maintain some sanity at work, and enjoy the weekend. We could all use a little fun. So leave your work at work when you leave today and I promise not to check my work email (maybe), if you promise not to check yours.
And as for for the lack of posts on the blog this month, I assure you that it was because I was busy on other social media stuff and not just because I was slacking. No, really…. I swear…
