… the HR Minion. Because even minions have opinions. And giggles.

In the year 2013

I’m a little sad to see 2012 go. It was a good year for me that held a lot of positives and fond memories. I am looking forward to 2013 though and while I am excited about all the possibilities of the new year, I also see 2013 as a year filled with important decisions. That means things will get stressful, but I’m hoping it will all be worth it by this point next year. Cross your fingers for me.

But what will 2013 be like for HR? Hell if I know. I used to look for some big paradigm shift in the way things would be done but then I realized that the heart of HR is people, and people haven’t changed much over the years. People will always have conflicts, make mistakes, need help, and some people will never be engaged at work no mater how hard you try. And maybe you don’t mind as long as they perform their job and don’t harass their co-workers.

It’s the little things about HR and work that seem to shift and move. If nothing else there’s always something new you can try that will hopefully add value to your company and help you be a better resource to your employees. And if it doesn’t that’s ok too. After all, we should never stop learning and stop trying to improve.

I do think there will be some kind of tipping point in HR that will cause a major shift in how we do things, but we aren’t there yet. Maybe more of the old guard need to retire first or maybe we just need some more new and innovative HR blood to help push us forward. Or maybe HR will revert back to when we just pushed paper around and all the real fun stuff will be taken over by something new entirely. Who knows?

All I know is that it’s already 2013 in some parts of the world. The future is now people. So take a deep breath, carry on, be good to those around you, and stay safe out there. And let’s all work hard to make 2013 awesome.
